Plan your stay in the town of Tours

Adjacent to Saint-Pierre-des-Corps where the TGV station is located, the city of Tours is easily accessible by train but also by plane thanks to its airport Tours-Val de Loire, or by motorway A10 from Paris. Situated on the banks of the Loire and Cher rivers, this city of art and history which saw the birth of Honoré de Balzac has an incomparably charming old town listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The impressive St. Gatien Cathedral, built between the 13th and 16th centuries, is the starting point for a pleasant stroll. At the foot of the building, in the former bishop's palace, stands the Museum of Fine Art surrounded by a French garden. Heading west, travellers will pass by the Grand Theatre before entering the Old Town. A maze of pedestrian alleys lined with half-timbered houses stretches around the picturesque Place Plumereau, which is always very lively. The basilica of Saint-Martin is undoubtedly worth a detour, and you should not hesitate to climb to the top of the Charlemagne Tower, built in the 11th century, which offers a panoramic view of the city. Visitors should head along rue Colbert where Renaissance buildings such as the 15th-century Hotel Goüin stand. The banks of the Loire are then within easy reach. With its promenades and open-air cafes, the river banks are made for leisurely strolling. For an unusual trip on the Loire, it is possible to take a trip on a "gabare", a traditional Loire boat.

Built in the 18th century, the Wilson Bridge which spans the river with multiple arches offers a beautiful panorama of the islets and their sandbanks. Aucard Island is accessed by the Saint-Symphorien footbridge inaugurated in 1847. This suspension bridge for the exclusive use of pedestrians starts at the foot of Tours castle, an iconic building which will give a first glimpse of the great monuments of the Loire Valley, from Chambord to Cheverny.

Book a charming hotel and set off to explore the Touraine region and the chateaux of the Loire.

A holiday in the Tour region invites you to go back in time to the world of the kings of France. Located around the city of Tours, these les Collectionneurs establishments are idyllic pieds-à-terre to discover castles and their histories, such as Azay-le-Rideau, intimately linked to François I, or the Clos Lucé where Leonardo da Vinci spent the winter of his life, but also great monuments such as the Château de Chenonceau which spans the Cher, the royal fortress of Chinon, or perhaps Villandry and its fabulous gardens. The area around Tours also boasts some of the most charming villages in France, such as Savonnières, Luynes and Rochecorbon, a small town famous for its troglodytic dwellings nestled in the heart of the Vouvray vineyards.

For the Touraine region also abounds in vineyards on the banks of the Loire. Oenology (wine) enthusiasts will enjoy visiting the cellars of the great estates and tasting a chenin blanc. From the stony limestone soils of Vouvray near Tours, the vines stretch to the hillsides of Bourgueil towards neighbouring Anjou, or towards the Vendômois, as does the promise of pleasant countryside walks. The hotels selected by les Collectionneurs will be able to direct their guests towards excursions and sporting activities available in the area such as a hike or a bike ride along the banks of the Loire.

Book a restaurant in Tours

The region where Rabelais (the celebrated French author) was born undoubtedly whets the appetite. The Touraine, Mecca of French gastronomy, offers culinary specialities such as Loire fish or cheeses such as selles-sur-cher or sainte-maure-de-touraine, but also lesser-known treasures such as "poire tapée", black truffle, or saffron which has been cultivated there for a long time. The chefs of the restaurants recommended by les Collectionneurs take their inspiration from local produce and create subtle harmonies using flavours from further afield. Restaurateurs who share a taste for authentic and creative cuisine tread a fine line between escape and tradition. The Touraine is happy to oblige with great restaurants offering a culinary experience with dishes best savoured along with a wine born of the Loire Valley grape varieties.
